The Prince Who Contemplates His Death
Inspired by the 2005 film Bab'Aziz: The Prince Who Contemplates His Soul, by Tunisian writer and director Nacer Khemir, my project The Prince Who Contemplates His Death delves into a particular stage of journeying: the act of departure without reaching an arrival.
These color-rich, layered glazes speak to the richness of my life's journey, with bold and radiant hues that cover more than half of each sculpture on one side to more muted tones on the other side where every sculpture starts alluding to a calligraphic line, signaling a split between what is apparent and what muted in the background. Ceramics as a malleable medium allows me to materialize these transitions into works grounded in and transcending script. Each piece represents a part of my journey and is based on a deconstructed Arabic letter. Through this marriage of line and color, I seek to encapsulate the delicate balance between the simplicity of the path and the complexities found along the way.
An allegorical journey from one place to another often symbolizes death, the fleeting nature of life, and the seeker’s mystical passage. The Journey unveils travelers’ true faces and characters, revealing what was previously hidden. A journey is laden with hardship and risk, bringing dangers like insecurity, theft, and the potential to lose one’s way, perhaps never to return.
